Sant Cugat in Africa:
Know and support on-site projects in Africa through a local counterpart with experience and rooting. For this reason everything has been designed in cooperation and supervision by Music Crossroads Malawi.
Through music and education generate processes of change, leadership and personal and social transformation, with the people of the country as a promoter and protagonist of all of them.
Our project's guiding lines in Malawi
- A shared and co-organized project, not a European plan for Africa, but the result of the work of a mixed team and real cooperation.
- Educational activity is essential for social transformation.
- Teacher training is key to transforming the social base from the first stages of education and to creating a self-sustainable long-range project. The training of Masters in Malawi is very short and obviously do not come many pedagogical resources or tools for their activity as a teacher.
- The project has to become self-sustaining.
- Music as an educational tool is a very effective strategic tool. The teacher's musical training could be seen as a luxury object given the fundamental shortcomings of this country, but there are sudden reasons that justify the use of music as a channel of transformation. We are convinced of the strength of music in the educational process, both for the skills it entails and for the capacity of emotional and social penetration it provokes.
Support the work of teachers in that country.
- A program for trainer trainers: necessary to ensure the survival of the project.
- A continuous training program of teachers by volunteer specialists with adequate preparation.
- Equip the classrooms with the appropriate educational material for the classrooms in that country. Books, instruments, songs… Without falling into cultural colonization, it is necessary to structure the pathways so that the work material is the repertoire typical of its culture. We started without our own materials, but in 2013 we already edited the first song-music book based on the repertoire of the cultures of this country. After having prepared a team capable of transcribing and editing these materials. Today with the support of UNESCO.
Different formations have been created that help to materialise the project.
A) Hear Us Kid's. A group that today accommodates 150 boys and girls of school age, and to those that through musical work (songs and traditional dances) are done a school follow-up, a work of empowerment and personal reflection.
B) the Hear Us Festival. It accommodates 16 schools (some of them with about 6000 students) and that serves as an incentive to extend the work begun in these schools. The finalist group will be able to send students to the annual exchange in Catalonia.
C) Model Choir. An open heart to all those who want to deepen their musical learning. And in fact a platform for their jobs or groups where they are linked can send the values proposed from MC Malawi.
D) the Nyimbo Buku. The first volume has already been published (2014) and from this the UNESCO has continued with a project to recover the music and the typical dances of these cultures. This material must now be returned to schools and teachers for use in the classroom.
